We Are Nature

Make With Respect For All
The Earth is an eternal source of inspiration for House of Hackney - she is both the muse and the poet. In gratitude for all that Mother Nature gives us, we do everything in our power to give back; harnessing eco-friendly materials and methods, championing causes that safeguard the world’s precious wildlife, and putting people before profit.

Support Life Sustaining Resources
We have come to realise that protecting our forests is more essential than replanting them - so we’ve formed an alliance. House of Hackney is proud to partner with the World Land Trust; the international conservation charity that safeguards our most vital natural ecosystems and threatened habitats, acre by acre.
Our partnership means that each item you buy from House of Hackney enables us to purchase and protect 35 square metres of forest.
In 2022 we protected over 170 acres of ancient woodland.

Tread Softly
We want to step lightly on the planet; the only footsteps we leave should be those for future eco warriors to follow. We are a certified carbon neutral company; this means we offset the carbon from the atmosphere that we emit. We also produce our collections in small batches while printing wallpaper, mixing paint and crafting furniture on a made-to-order basis. Our low-waste approach to manufacturing means we avoid making more than is needed, thus lessening the burden on our planet.

Design To Love And Last
We believe in caring for our land, not contributing to landfill. So, House of Hackney champions the idea of buying less and instead investing in good-quality pieces that last. Combining age-old craftsmanship with enduring style, our designs are ‘future heirlooms’ – made to stand the test of time and be passed down to the next generation.

Think Globally, Act Locally
We proudly fly the flag for British manufacturing, championing traditional, local skills. Whether it’s flooring expertly woven by Axminster Carpets, furniture handmade in Nottingham, fabrics woven in Suffolk or paint, sustainably made in Gloucestershire, the provenance of our products is of great importance to us. Supporting small-scale, traditional industries, we work with some of the UK’s finest craftspeople – meaning we can both drive local employment and deliver unparalleled quality.

Care For People And Planet
We pledge 1% of all sales to charities and initiatives close to our heart, that care for people and planet.
When building our House, from the very first brick laid, we knew that nature would be a part of every business decision. We want to go a step further than being sustainable - as well as protecting the earth, we want to heal her. We are exploring local regenerative agriculture in order to work more in harmony with the natural world. When nature is doing well, we are doing well.

Be Like Nature
We wax and wane with the seasons; attuned to our circadian rhythm, we work 4 days in the summer, and finish earlier in the winter. We are in harmony with the sun and in balance with life.
Like Mother Nature, respect for all life on earth is key for us. We see human connection and community as a powerful tool to unite us in the common goal of protecting our shared home. We stand for inclusivity and diversity; from our employees to craftspeople, suppliers and farmers in the field, we want to ensure fairly paid, decent, meaningful work for everyone.

What does relaxation mean to you? For some, it’s about curling up on the living room couch at the end of a long day – for others, it might be taking to the dining room with a few close friends and a bottle of wine in tow. But a point on which we can all agree is that the bedroom is the one place in the house that was made purely for relaxing in. It’s a space that should soothe you and gently lull you towards a restful sleep. It’s where dreaming takes place and where you wake up to the view you want to see every morning. So, it follows that your bedroom should be cosy and calming, filled only with the things you love. But just as we all have our own take on what ‘chilling out’ is, everyone has a distinct idea of what ‘comfort’ looks and feels like to them.
What does relaxation mean to you? For some, it’s about curling up on the living room couch at the end of a long day – for others, it might be taking to the dining room with a few close friends (and a bottle of wine) in tow.

So, while we’re not trying to convert you away from pale colours and pared-back neutrals if that’s your thing, we will tell you that dark wallpaper works like a dream in the bedroom, naturally evoking nightfall and cocooning you in its inky depths. But regardless of whether you go into the light or over to the dark side, “A tonal scheme is what makes a truly relaxing bedroom,” says our Decorating Consultant, Steve Corcoran. “Choose colours that coordinate with your chosen wallpaper or fabric when decorating the rest of the room. Even the ceiling should be a muted version of what you have in the space, rather than a stark white, so that everything combines to create a cohesive palette.”

The stuff of dreams
If you’re someone who finds peace and tranquillity in nature, surrounding yourself with a verdant motif like BAMBUSA or PALMERAL will feel just as serene. Alternatively, prints that are rich with intricate detail – think the psychedelic wonderland unfurling across FLORIKA or the prehistoric playground of DINOSAURIA – will delight a distracted mind, making for a mesmerising alternative to counting sheep into the small hours. Then by covering all four walls in your chosen design – complete with a plump of matching cushions on the bed – you will be completely enveloped in a world of your own making. As Steve says, “It will make the space feel more harmonious and avoid a single feature wall on its own feeling heavy – having them all papered actually pushes the walls back out.”

NIGHT LIGHTS
The perfect bedfellows? A luxurious lampshade paired with a statement-making stand.
Shop lighting

No bedroom is complete without blackout curtains and blinds to shut the world out, nor should any bedside table be without a striking lamp to illuminate a screeching alarm clock in the dark. Then it’s all about adding warmth and texture with crisp white bedsheets (the perfect foil to a deep palette, if you do go that way), a cosy blanket and a few luxurious cushions to cuddle up to. Sweet dreams…
