In a Victorian townhouse in London, Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle first dreamed up House of Hackney.
As the seeds of our House were planted in 2011, they saw an opportunity to create a new model of business; one that valued people and planet above profit, was led by their values, championed slow, sustainable growth and used less invasive production methods.
Today the husband-and-wife team has grown into a family of artists, designers, producers and collaborators. Built upon the foundations of creativity with purpose, integrity in our actions and compassion for people and planet, we continue to build upon the House, creating unique and inspiring designs that will stand the test of time.
On our doorstep is a special place called Hackney; a village-like borough of London with a melting pot of cultures and a colourful community of creatives that never fail to inspire us.
The House we’ve created is a sanctuary from the outside world, adorned with prints and colours inspired by Mother Nature. Following in the footsteps of our design hero, William Morris, our house is not filled with lots of ‘stuff’, only things that have a purpose, created for both their beauty and their meaning. We call them ‘future heirlooms’; artistically designed, sustainable pieces made in Britain by craftspeople specialising in generations-old trades.
Objects that tell a story; collected treasures that hold memories; music and joy are what make a house a home - live surrounded by what you love.
Our House is your house
Welcome home
“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”
– William Morris

The Foundations
of Our House
The Kitchen
…is the beating heart of our household, for it is where it all began, with our founders Frieda and Javvy, around a kitchen table at their house in Hackney. Today it serves to nourish creativity and innovation.
The Bedroom
…is where dreams are made; dreams of a better tomorrow - one where we can live in harmony with nature.
The Livingroom
…is where we live and breathe art, music and stories from the past and present which inspire us to create.
The Bathroom
…is our sanctuary. A space where we can switch off from the outside world and reconnect with ourselves in the healing embrace of water and candle light.
The Garden
…is where we connect to our muse, Mother Nature. Tending to her with care and compassion, we look after our garden, and the earth, for this generation and the next.

Casting a Spell: The Supernaturally Beautiful Blooms of Majorelle.
Once upon a time, in a land not far from the isle of Avalon where our tale began, a young boy and girl lived in a tiny cottage close to a great forest. The siblings feared the woods, for frightening figures seemed to lurk in the gloom. Deep within the sea of dead trees stood a house like no other: built from gingerbread bricks, the windowpanes were piped with chocolate and the roof dripped with icing. You’ll have already heard the story of how those children got lost in the woods and were lured into that strange house. But what you may not know is what happened after their escape – of what came after the ‘happily ever after’…

INSPIRATION
A Corner of Paradise
Be inspired with ideas for how to make our House your own.

In our House, we also can’t get enough of plants. From clusters of geraniums to giant leafy ferns, botanicals have the unique power to infuse a room with colour, vitality and life. But amidst all this, the loveliest addition might just be to carve out your own quiet little nook. A snug away from the main action where you can curl up in a comfy chair and hit pause, if only for a moment. In a room where absolutely everything and anything goes, this is truly where the magic happens.

![]() | Terms & ConditionsIf your existing seats are well-loved, but perhaps a little too well-worn, be it a sumptuous printed velvet or a smooth cotton-linen – can be enough to make you want to snuggle up on them all over again. When it comes to furniture (which can also be a scene stealer in its own right), your choice will likely be dictated by the number of family members and friends who will regularly be hanging out here: will a cosy two-seater sofa be enough, or will you also need a chaise longue and a few ‘bottomans’ for your visitors to park their, um, bottoms on? A mantelpiece, if you’re lucky enough to have one, is even more worthy. The last few pieces of the puzzle are the myriad layers and textures that make a space so inviting. Think a coffee table stacked with books and tactile cushions in an intriguing mix of shapes, sizes and patterns – all things which are easy to move around until you find a combination that appeals to you. A mantelpiece, if you’re lucky enough to have one, is even more swoon-worthy with the addition of eye-catching candelabras, hand-painted porcelain candle pots and treasured keepsakes you’ll have picked up on your travels. |
