Our House

House of Hackney is the B Corp interiors brand inspiring people to protect our common home by bringing the beauty of Nature into theirs.

Known for our iconic wallpaper, fabric, furniture, home accessories and award-winning paint inspired by the natural world, each product is designed with purpose, made with love and built to last.

Championing craft, compassion and community, our mission is to contribute to the restoration of Nature and our quality of life on Earth.

"Designed with purpose, made with love and built to last."

OUR STORY

OUR STORY

Dreamed up in a London townhouse by Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle in 2011, the husband-and-wife team has grown into a family of artists, designers, producers and collaborators.

Following in the footsteps of our design hero, William Morris, we meld creativity with purpose, creating products that are both beautiful and useful, with as little impact as possible. We call them ‘future heirlooms’; artistically designed pieces made in Britain by craftspeople specialising in generations-old trades.

Proudly certified as a B Corp, Mother Nature & Future Generations are at the heart of the House, with seats on our board of directors.

Rooted in British heritage, regenerative values and compassion for people and planet, we continue to build upon the House, creating unique and inspiring designs that will stand the test of time, and using business as a force for good.

Our House is your house,

Welcome home.

House of Hackney is a restoration project rooted in Nature, Craft, Community and Awe! Inspired by Nature’s living systems, we use creativity and business as catalysts to regenerate our common home.

INSPIRED BY NATURE, FOR NATURE

INSPIRED BY NATURE, FOR NATURE

Nature is an eternal source of inspiration for House of Hackney, she is both muse and mentor.

We have always been known as a “sustainable” brand…and now we are evolving our House to be a regenerative one. This means going beyond simply sustaining our planet, and instead, actively making things better.

We want to see a world where businesses work in harmony with Nature.

With both our products and how we run our company, we’re working hard to reduce our impact.

Most of our products are made-to-order, to reduce waste. We use FSC-certified, purposely grown trees for our wallpaper and furniture, organically grown cotton and recycled materials in many of our fabrics, responsibly sourced, traceable wool and innovative materials.

We are committed to evolving our products and pioneering a new way of business to support the thriving of all life on earth, now, and for the future.

Our Craft

Our founders Frieda & Javvy share the story of the origins of our House, our inspirations and our commitment to social and environmental change.

Designed with purpose, made with love and built to last.

What products does House of Hackney sell?

Whilst we’re most well known for our bold, yet contemporary print wallpaper and fabrics, we also offer an award-winning paint collection, The Art of Nature, hand-crafted furniture and upholstered furniture, which is available in any of our fabrics, including chairs, sofas, headboards, tables and beds. We have a large selection of home accessories, including lighting, cushions and decor, and a full range of flooring, including carpets, rugs and stair runners, created in collaboration with heritage factory, Axminster Carpets.

Is House of Hackney a sustainable brand?

Whilst traditionally known as a “sustainable” or “eco-friendly” brand, we have decided to move away from these terms, as we evolve to become measurably regenerative, going beyond simply “sustaining” and restoring more than we take. This means that in all we do, from materials and production to how we run our company, we are working towards actively making things better by evolving our products and pioneering a new way of business to support the thriving of all life on earth, now, and for the future. Why is House of Hackney unique?

At House of Hackney, we think you shouldn't have to compromise the planet or style. We’re redefining what luxury should look like, transforming how we shop, decorate, live and work to be more in harmony with Nature.

As a design house inspired by the natural world, and with Mother Nature & Future Generations as legal directors in our company, a lot of thought goes into each and every thing we do at House of Hackney.

We choose materials and production methods that have the least impact on the environment; for example, most of our product is made-to-order, reducing waste; we use responsibly sourced, fully traceable wool instead of feathers in our cushions and for our flooring; organically grown cotton in fabrics and FSC Certified, purposely grown trees for our wallpaper. All of this adds to a more expensive price, but for us, lessening the cost to the planet, and its people is worth it.

We are a Living Wage company. Our artisans and factory teams are paid fairly, and the product is made using principles of traditional craftsmanship - not to be disposable but to last for a very long time. For some of our products, such as our furniture, that means a lifetime (or more). Many of our product lines are crafted close to home, supporting local factory communities, which, of course, has a higher cost than mass-produced products.
