Inspired by two Victorian greats, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and William Morris, this new furniture collection honours traditional craft, beautiful materials and enduring design.
From tree to table, each element of the collection is handcrafted from solid oak and tulip wood by historic cabinet makers, Titchmarch & Goodwin, who have been creating artisan woodwork since 1920.
Simple, solid and elegant, the iron arches of Brunel’s Tamar River bridge, the background of House of Hackney’s spiritual home, The Castle of Trematon, and the soft motifs of Nature, come together to create heirloom pieces that will last for generations to come.
Reflecting William Morris’ legacy of harmony, beauty and connection to traditional craft, these pieces are true future heirlooms.
THE DESIGN
THE DESIGN
The Brunel collection is inspired by the nineteenth century Arts & Crafts movement, of which William Morris was a founding member. This movement used Nature motifs as a way to connect to the world; it was a rebellion against the mass-produced, mechanical style of the industrial age. Natural curves, delicate detail and traditional hand crafting were a direct rejection of machine-made products, and a way to bring back the ‘joy in labour’.
This collection is handcrafted by design, respecting and representing the heritage and importance of skilled labour, and safeguarding traditional craft for future generations.
The flowing, undulating shape of the tables and mirrors were directly inspired by the curves of the Royal Albert Bridge in Cornwall, over the River Tamar, built in 1854 by Brunel, which can be seen from the gardens of the Castle of Trematon, home of House of Hackney founders.
The simple design, and solid construction from beautiful oak ensure that these pieces will be at home in both contemporary and traditional spaces, and will be enjoyed for years to come.
The finishing touch on each piece is the poppy rosette. A recurring motif in Arts & Crafts designs and these are made from waste wood, these emblems are an ode to Morris, and his enduring legacy of beauty, craft and social justice in design.
THE MATERIALS
Each piece is handcrafted to order, from slow, purposely grown oak and tulip wood sourced from sustainably managed forests supporting longevity and local biodiversity.
All tables and natural finished mirrors are crafted from French oak. This particular tree offers a cleaner cut than other wood, making it perfect for furniture making.
The painted mirrors are made from tulip wood, a beautiful, lightweight hard wood, offering a smooth surface for colour.
Poppy rosettes are crafted from waste wood that would otherwise have been discarded.

THE CRAFT
THE CRAFT
Every piece in the Brunel Collection is handcrafted by Titchmarch & Goodwin at their factory in Suffolk, England. Titchmarch & Goodwin have been traditional, artisan cabinet makers since 1920. With heritage, history and the belief that furniture should be made simply, beautifully, and to last, each table and mirror is crafted by hand with no mechanical fixings. Every element is made from wood, using the traditional mortise and tenon technique.
Mortise and tenon, or peg construction, is a symbol of a handcrafted item. It shows a piece is made by a person’s hands, rather than by mass production; again, echoing William Morris’ values of the importance of labour, and respecting the maker and materials.
A final nod to Morris’ in the final stage of production, is the stain. Morris made and used natural dyes, crafted from Nature, and so in this spirit, our stain is made with earth pigments. Then, balancing beauty with practicality, it is lacquered, bringing out the beautiful natural grain of the wood, and ensuring it can be treasured for years to come.
Reflecting William Morris’ legacy of harmony, beauty and connection to traditional craft, these pieces are true future heirlooms.
