Quercus by Name, Quirky by Nature
A Love Letter to William Morris
The Transformation of the Gate Lodge
Built in 1808, the Quercus Lodge lies nestled within the walls of the Castle of Trematon, sat atop the ancient pagan hills once seen as the gateway between England and Cornwall. The castle, built by Robert, Count of Mortain in 1060, passed to the Duchy of Cornwall in 1337 and is now home to House of Hackney founders, Frieda and Javvy, who found themselves its guardians three years ago. After renovating the main house and restoring the gardens, their attention turned to the 19th century gate lodge.
“We wanted the lodge to be rustic and simple, yet otherworldly, as its fairytale setting within the castle walls is just that.”
- Frieda
Localisation has always been important to Frieda and Javvy - it is at the very heart
of House of Hackney. The sea and flora & fauna of Cornwall acted as their muse for the lodge interior; the art of bringing the beauty of the outdoors in is, after all, the House’s speciality. Named for the towering oak tree that stands before it, the vision for the Quercus Lodge was to mix the artistry of nature with the building’s storied history - a paean to simple living yet rich in a tapestry of print and colour.

The colours are inspired by the pigments of the land, the textiles, by the surroundings; it feels like the home of an artist.
The wood-clad walls were the perfect blank canvas to showcase House of Hackney’s paint collection, ‘The Art of Nature’. The House’s vibrant approach to colour has always been rooted in nature’s tonal harmony; the desire to imitate its beauty, creativity and idyllic compositions is emulated in each and every one of the shades. The collection honours Mother Nature not only through irreverent colour, but in the very way it is made. The eco-friendly, made-to-order paints promise a light environmental footprint and no waste - bringing beauty to the home while reflecting the principles of sustainability that makes House of Hackney a B Corp brand.
An homage to House of Hackney’s design hero William Morris, the space showcases some of his most iconic designs. His nature-inspired prints of oak leaves, flowers and vines run through the rooms in the textiles, upholstery and the patterns painting the walls - each, of course, given a House of Hackney twist. The classic GOLDEN LILY sweeps through the decor, whilst gothic BLACKTHORN with its hidden skulls and pop of pink and red add drama to the kitchen where the handcrafted scullery bench by Huckleberry takes centre stage. Rich, earthy tones of brown, green, blue and ochre lend warmth to the scheme and the QUERCUS leaf motif throughout echoes the ancient oaks that surround the lodge; timeless and enduring.
Works from local artists Peter Ward, David Perry and Alvaro Picardo adorn the walls, and furniture sourced from Cornish antique dealers was reupholstered locally. In the dining room, the panelling painted in grounding pink DAHLIA brings out the warmth of the natural wood and a bespoke banquette covered in ‘Tourmaline’ BLACKTHORN velvet echoes the kitchen walls. The living room’s PETUNIA green hue provides the perfect backdrop to the statement making MANZANA lamp in gloss black, and the velvet GOLDEN LILY MAGNA curtains add a striking modernity. In the bathroom, golden toned QUERCUS radiates an autumnal glow against rich AURIC walls, and a yellow claw-foot bathtub adds just a hint of rock ‘n’ roll. Crystal hued LAZULITE blue is the star of the bedroom; its vibrant yet calming tones reflected in the ruffle of a cushion and the curtain’s winding pattern. Above the four-poster Queen Anne bed, the dark florals of WOODSTOCK create a velvet canopy, so one can fall asleep amidst a meadow of wildflowers.
Discover our reimagined William Morris prints for AW22, including BLACKTHORN, GOLDEN LILY, QUERCUS and SEAWEED in a palette of stunning colours.
