AT HOME IN WEST SUSSEX

Weaving her magic with paint, Georgia’s work explores the intuitive female spirit; the joyful colour, perceptive brushstrokes and dancing botanical forms, a celebration of life itself. Nature, with its rich symbolism and ever renewing cycle, is the crux of Georgia’s creations, and an endless source of inspiration.

We join Georgia at home in the West Sussex countryside where she has adopted an old Georgian granary as her studio. With its ancient brickwork and hulking wooden beams looking out onto a verdant English garden, it's easy to see how this space inspires her.

For Georgia, her studio is more than just a place to work, it is sacrosanct. A sacred space where the energies of her inspirations, the surrounding countryside and mercurial light come together and compel her - brush to canvas. She feels she paints best when either lively and energised, or still and calm, and it is to her environment she looks to provide these moods - her sanctuary from the outside world.

“The idea that it is my creative home, of nesting, gives
me the sense of calm reassurance that I need in order
to produce work.”

Like the intuitive process of painting, Georgia’s approach to decorating is visceral, focusing on what feeling a room should evoke rather than following method and trends. The age and history of the space meant she had to let the building guide her somewhat in her interior choices, and maintaining the harmony between the old and new was paramount. As a working studio, the space needed to contain quiet walls for Georgia to work, but be more than just a blank canvas. Design Consultant Steve worked with her to come up with a scheme that, as Georgia put, would “emote but not consume”. The wish to bring the outside in led to the beautiful wooded landscape of PLANTASIA, an enchanting pastoral print that doesn’t need to shout to be heard. In ‘Sage’ green, and complemented by paint in forest SAP and oak-leaf LAURUSTINE, the scheme softly echoes the rhythmic artistry of nature she so beautifully captures in her work.

“PLANTASIA sits perfectly between old and new, conjuring up classical murals, yet also feeling very clean, fresh and unstuffy. SAP and LAURUSTINE were perfect additions, layering up the greens, just like in nature and serving as a perfect backdrop for the ever changing pieces of work in the space.”

Ancient oak beams trace the outline of the grain store, each climbing the walls and pirouetting the rafters, mirrored by the majestic trees of the wallpaper. In the kitchenette, a postcard painted odalisque looks down onto a palette, old with oil paint, drying amongst drinking glasses; the charming face of a vintage dairy cow creamer looks out through tins of well-used brushes and a lucky horseshoe hangs from a beam. The balance between old and new preserved and the stillness of the woods somehow encapsulated, this is the perfect space for an artist to create, and look to the future - one that seems bright for this talented painter.pired.

“I can see some indication that we are moving towards an attempt to reconnect with our natural world, which in turn will surely bring about more connectivity to ourselves and to our communities. I am hopeful, I think we have to be.”
