The Ideal Hue for You: How to Pick the Perfect Shade

Infuse your home with colour and discover The Art of Nature, House of Hackney’s paint collection of 60+ sublime shades. An ode to our muse, each and every shade is swatched from Mother Nature’s colour palette. From statement shades procured from plants and petals, to tranquil pigment-inspired neutrals; here’s how to bring the beauty of the outside into your home and conjure your desired mood by picking the ideal hue for you…

Start with the Heart
When choosing your ideal hue, we encourage you to start with the heart. Go for the shade that sparks an emotional response. Colour is very emotive, and you should live with what you love, so listen to your instincts. If you are playing with a blank canvas, you have the creative freedom to choose anything that appeals to you.

Size Up Your Space
Consider the size and function of the space, this will help determine what shade may work best. For example, when coating your box room with colour, selecting lighter hues can make your space feel larger and more airy, while opting for darker shades can have a cosy, cocooning effect. The same applies to large spaces, where you may want to use a warm, rich shade to create a more intimate feeling, or use a darker shade on the ceiling to bring it down.

Get in the Mood
Every colour will inspire a different mood, so what exactly is your desired effect? Blues and greens imbue a soothing sense of serenity and are perfect for those spaces in which you want to unwind - think bedrooms and bathrooms. Pinks and earthy neutrals are grounding, deep blues, browns and blacks can be cocooning and cosy and statement reds and richer hues offer an inviting confidence suited to social areas such as living and dining rooms.

Let There Be Light
It’s important to consider the light levels and orientation of your chosen room, as this will help determine your colour palette. South facing spaces enjoy a lot of warm natural light, so can take any colour. Soft, neutral tones will enhance the light and airy feeling. North facing rooms receive cooler light, so opt for warmer tones to soften the light and elevate the ambience, or embrace the natural light and go for dark and decadent shades. The beauty of highly pigmented paint like ours is that it changes with natural light, so we recommend sampling chosen shades so you can see how it transforms from morning to evening.

Consider Colour Coordination
Consider other colours you will be working into your scheme. How will these complement your chosen shade? For example, coordinate shades to create a colour-drenched scheme; using various tones of the same shade promises perfect colour cohesion. We recommend painting the ceiling to create a seamless effect. If you’re after something more striking, opt for multiple hues on walls and architectural details, or use a contrasting shade on doors and skirting boards.
