THE STORY OF ST MICHAEL`S

“A place to call your own, somewhere to get creative and decorate your own way – to live surrounded by what you love. In our House, there are no rules.”‌

House of Hackney’s London Flagship at St Michael’s opened its gothic doors in March 2022. Located 5 minutes from Old Street Station, and taking inspiration from its former life as a clergy house, the four-storey building is set up as a home with each room featuring an inspired edit of the collections for you to see, touch and feel.‌

Built in 1856, House of Hackney’s home is set in a hidden enclave of ecclesiastical buildings that have remained untouched as the city has been built around them. The gothic architecture and stained glass windows of St Michael’s bestow the perfect backdrop to showcase the collections.‌

Our founders, Frieda and Javvy, worked with architects Busby Webb (the architects behind Jack White’s Third Man Records) to reimagine St Michael’s for this new era. Inspired by its past, the House offers an emotive sensory brand experience;
depicting a rich tapestry of living.‌

The interiors at St Michael’s act as a miniature museum for irreverent British design. In keeping with the brand’s ethos of championing local factories and generations-old techniques, the décor is anchored by timeless yet characterful creations crafted by artisans. Lining the House are exquisitely woven carpets and rugs, the fruits of a special collaboration between House of Hackney and Axminster Carpets. Framing the ceiling, newly installed coving celebrates St Michael’s original features. Our very own paint range, The Art of Nature, artistically brings the walls to life, juxtaposing gothic architecture with modern day colour. ‌“Live with what you love” is the mantra at St Michael’s. Decorate your own way; there are no rules. Follow your heart and create the home interior
sanctuary that speaks to you.‌

Store of the Future

The customer experience at St Michael’s is like no other. Merging traditional appointments and the human touch with interior innovation, we have created bespoke immersive technology to help bridge the imagination gap. No more wondering “how will this interior scheme look in my own home?”, as this technology allows the customer to mix and match paints and wallpapers on an interface before projecting the scheme onto a wall to visualise the scheme in true scale; as if it were in your own home. Schemes and mood boards can be saved onto a personal profile, enabling customers to access them at home and build on them further.‌

“It’s always been important to us that we help bridge the imagination gap, allowing people to dream and helping make those dreams a reality. We’ve always thought outside of the box. Although we are inspired by the artistry and craftsmanship of the past, we want to align this with pioneering innovation. This new chapter and our move to St Michael’s felt the right time to craft a piece of technology that brought our collections to life.” Co-Founder, Javvy M Royle ‌

Creativity, Compassion

& Community

House of Hackney was founded on the guiding principles of the 3 C’s, creativity, compassion and community. At the start of 2021, House of Hackney was awarded B Corp™ status reflecting the importance we place on the highest standards of ethics. This ethos permeates through St Michael’s from the team uniform (vintage and upcycled with embroidered Artemis print motif patches, inspired by the iconic Flying Burrito brother’s Nudie Suit) to the 50% old- to-new ratio to reuse for a light environmental footprint.‌

It has been our brand mission to create pieces with a strong artistic spirit whilst preserving local jobs and future-proofing the legacy of British manufacturing. Here at House of Hackney a product is never just a “product”; everything is designed with a meaning and purpose as ‘future heirlooms’, to be cherished for years. From the artwork to the lighting, each piece you will see at St Michael’s is available to buy and have in your home. In addition to our collections, we also offer emerging artists the opportunity to showcase and sell their work within our St Michael's showroom.‌

And to keep the kindness rolling; for each item sold at St Michael’s, House of Hackney purchase and protect 35 square metres of forest, thanks to our partnership with the World Land Trust, the international conservation charity that safeguards our most vital natural ecosystems and threatened habitats, acre by acre.‌

With an experience that blends innovation with artistry and sustainability, House of Hackney St Michael’s marks a new chapter not only for us as a brand but for the interior experience.
