AT HOME IN HACKNEY

We bring our House to Bunny’s home on the Sussex coast.

Taking the helm as both Editorial Director of the Dazed Media Group and Creative Director of NOWNESS, Bunny Kinney’s creative credits read like something from a dream. From GUCCI and Dior to Burberry and Sony Records, he has embedded his pioneering perspective into each and every endeavour.

We join Canadian born, Texas raised Bunny in the British seaside town of Hastings - the place he now calls home. A stone’s throw away from the beach, Bunny’s house is a perfect amalgamation of American and British cultural references, with a nostalgia befitting its seaside location. Describing his style as somewhere between a 1970’s teen bedroom and Ripley’s Believe it or Not! Museum, Bunny’s home is stuffed with charm and collected memories.

“…my design default is somewhere between a teenager's bedroom from the ‘70s and a Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum... Lived-in and cosy but full of weird little objects with souls.”

Taking pride of place on Bunny’s bed sits a 1963 cushion of Schroeder from Peanuts, casually chilling in a Beethoven shirt, above which hangs the iconic Darby Crash Germs poster from seminal ‘70s punk fanzine Slash. In the fireplace, a vintage fire screen painted with roses is surrounded by a mantel holding artfully curated family pictures, candles, and a ceramic statue of Bruce Lee, arms poised for a fight.

A Snoopy lamp rests playfully on a stack of books and beside his bed a collection of 1950s occult novels by Dennis Wheatley plays host to an old Japanese lamp. Bunny’s prized possession is a hand-painted
Videodrome poster from Ghana.

“I love the DINOSAURIA print, it feels both child-like and grown-up…”

Intuition is Bunny’s M.O when designing. With a kind of self-possessed cavalier approach, he works and reworks a scheme until it feels like home, following his gut and trusting his editorial eye - it’s devil-may-care, but the devil does care, has great taste and strongly approves. Never understated in his interiors, maximalism is the way to Bunny’s heart. The whimsical ambiguity of the DINOSAURIA wallpaper played to his sensibilities; the way the print is “both child-like and grown-up” really meshed with his playful aesthetic. The muted warmth of FUNGHI, used to paint the fire surround, soft pedals its intricate carving, allowing his treasured objects to take centre stage, and the serene green of CELADON and the barely-there plaster pink ACHILLEA lend the irreverent dinosaur print a touch of sophistication. Our ARTEMIS cushion takes its place on the bed next to Schroeder, and a DINOSAURIA one sits on a striped mid-century chair. A few rolls of wallpaper and tins of paint later, it's as if House of Hackney had always been at home here.

“I've always wanted to have a whole house full of maximalist, mismatched wallpaper! All it took was some paste.”

Bunny’s final touch for making a house a home is stacks of books and eternal muse / esteemed housemate - his cat, Pan.
