AT HOME IN Hackney
Illustrator and slow fashion advocate Ronaé lives in East London with her family.
After witnessing the harmful role fast fashion plays on the lives of women, the BIPOC community and the environment, Ronaé Fagon redirected her experience in the industry to become a campaigner for fair fashion and an advocate for the people whose voices were not being heard. Through enlightening illustration and her role as head of partnerships for slow fashion marketplace SlowCo, Ronaé is raising awareness and telling the human stories of the crisis the fashion industry has created.
“i'm inspired by spaces i feel at ease in, that i want to practise in, spaces i can retreat to. i want to walk in and feel at home."
Home for Ronaé is a 1980s flat in the heart of Hacnkey, where her life is reflected in the things that surround her, and no space more so than her bedroom.
Each corner of the room holds a memory - delicate yet tangible. An illustration adorned with hand-pressed flowers rests on the windowsill, given as a token of love, solidarity and hope during the momentus time of racial injustice that sparked the Black Lives Matter movement. On the wall hangs a photograph from a trip to Yosemite National Park, capturing all the youthful promise of future, and below, a wooden shelf houses a bridesmaid's bouquet, tied with the bonds of friendship.

A self-confessed sentimentalist led by creative instinct, Ronaé had no intention of leaving her Design Consultation with an armful of wallpaper. But with our House designer Steve’s magic words, and the reassurance that wallpaper doesn’t have to be maximalist, Ronae’s mind was changed. Steve showed her how it could work for her by using print in an understated way, keeping the airy, light-filled feeling she loved. Growing up surrounded by the comforting oasis of plants that filled her Grandma’s house, the idea of sanctuary was really important to Ronaé. She was instantly drawn to the nostalgia of the BABYLON print, whose willow trees are reminiscent of 1950s Palm Springs. She was also captivated by the subtle, illuminating warmth of ASTERA, a paint which Steve paired perfectly with the tranquil green tones of CELADON - complementing both the new House of Hackney pieces and Ronaé’s own.

After enlisting a team of helpers - her mum and friends - Ronaé set to work turning her dream into a fully realised scheme. From laying the flooring to sanding woodwork, this transformation was a real labour of love.

A place to retreat from busy city living, Ronaé (with the help of our House) has created her own corner of paradise, where she can incorporate slow living in her favourite ways - by surrounding herself with her beloved plants, burning grounding scents and filling her home with music.
As for the future, Ronaé is hopeful for a more equitable world, for the eradication of exploitative fashion supply chains, rest without consequence for all of us and more sun kissed memories made with the ones we love - something we can all get on board with!
