Red Room

At the top of the house is the ‘red room’, a space that Frieda explains “is a real family room that caters to any of our needs. It’s a space where you can get energised in the morning, I do yoga up there, it’s where the children hang out and watch films, it’s where on a Saturday night we regroup with friends.” In a nod to Diana Vreeland’s iconic ‘Garden in Hell’ room the House of Hackney founders opted to cover every surface in a textile. Decorated in a miscellany of prints – from florals and stripes to leopard spots – it’s the studied palette of reds and creams that keeps the mesmerising mood of this “sanctuary” intact. A painting by artist Jhuma Sharma Roy hangs in pride of place; “I used to see it in the window of the London College of Fashion for years on my walk home every day and when I was pulling together the mood board for this room, it just came into my mind.” Arguably though, the pièce de résistance is the wallpapered ceiling – a detail Frieda herself describes as “quite amazing.”
