What inspires us at House of Hackney? We always start with the natural world. This season, we’ve been inspired by the most interesting leaf formations and bold colour schemes from the golden age of decorating, 1930s Hollywood, bringing the outdoors into the home. Read on to discover our top tips on how to work these fresh new prints and hues into your home this season.

Our Spring/Summer 2015 decorating mood board explores the beautiful intricacies and colours found within nature’s patterns. ‘Tarovine ‘sees the ubiquitous cheese plant hand-painted and over scaled in proportion for a striking modern statement. ‘Pampas’ takes us to the tropics of South America via its botanical ferns and grasses. ‘Castanea’, with the British horse chestnut leaf as its protagonist in this breathtaking painterly print, completes the new verdant collections. Be inspired with the new moods of decorating.
Pastel Palette Florals
Taking its inspirations from the great British horse chestnut tree Castanea brings the beauty of the outdoors into the home in this breathtaking painterly print. The spring colour palette of verdant greens with highlights of iced pink, silver grey and macaroon mint against an off-white background will create a light filled indoor garden in any space, echoing this season’s penchant for verdant prints.

IN YOUR HOME

There are beautiful benefits to wallpapering compartmental, feature or even half a wall where a dado rail is concerned. Decorate the remaining spaces with soft ice cream tones in complementary pastels shades to keep the effect subdued, serene and fresh.

For a lesser statetement, try a painted room in ice whites or pistchio green and replace block coloured lampshades with a ‘Castanea’ printed lampshade; Finish the look and stay within the continuous theme of nature with our exotic pineapple shaped lampstands.

For all out maximalism, be bold and match curtains and blinds, furniture and upholstery for a truly iconic statement.

1930s Tropics
Hollywood
Harking back to Hollywood’s golden age of decorating, Tarovine sees the Monstera Deliciosa leaf hand-painted, and dramatic in proportion, for a truly striking scheme. A monochromatic palette of ochre yellows and malachite greens is offset by optic white and signature midnight blue hue, which makes for a fresh and modern statement and brings the best of old age Californian glamour a into your home for spring.

Oriental
Palms
Pampas, with its inspiration in equatorial oases, depicts the intertwining silhouettes and shadow formations from banana leaves, ferns and grasses. Conjuring up a sense of the tropics, not only through its oriental palm silhouettes but with a palette of equitorial sunset hues, ‘Pampas’ takes a refreshing new approach to the tropical interiors trend. Contrasting vibrant mediterranean blues, powerful azealea pinks and viridis jungle green against a crisp white background puts the emphasis back on colour for SS15 in a big way.

IN YOUR HOME

To keep colour looking contemporary, rework boldly upholstered furniture in a variety of lightweight yet luxurious materials. Add interesting hardware details in the form of beautifully carved, dark hardwood or polished metal finishes. This helps to keep the hues grounded and less busy.

If print is a new decorating territory for you, the simple rule is to stick with neutral or complementary minimal details. Think optic white-washed room with printed scatter cushions and a feature wall, or a wallapered room with a neutral sofa. This will keep spaces looking fresh and clean, while using the print as an interesting focal point.

The easiest way to incorporate tropical prints is to focus solely on accents. Choose statement home accessories, such as a large cushions, unique lampshades or reupholstered headboards to complement solid wall colours.

IN YOUR HOME

Stripes come in various different personalities, and how you choose to use them in your decorating scheme can certainly change the mood of a room. The traditional borders of the ‘Kennington’ stripe allude to a quintessentially British style. When teamed with a print – such as ‘Pampas’ – the effect is to bring a dose of contemporary city stripe chic to the interior. Rooms with a dado or picture rail will benefit from this look greatly, since the divide creates natural compartments for each of the prints.

Alternatively, wider awning stripes – such as the ‘London’ – make a bold and contemporary contrast to larger scale prints. The monochromatic, clean-line style sits back to influences in Dorothy Draper’s work, the original and iconic American interior decorator of the 1930s. To create the look your own home, try working a striped wall with printed furniture or accents for a fresh decorating perespective.

Linear
Touches
Set to be one of this year’s biggest trends, stripes are undoubtedly having a moment in interior decorating. With their clean lines, natural borders and uniformity, stripes add symmetry and balance to a room, particularly when paired with print. New for SS15, we have introduced two types of stripe to work into your home: the ‘Kennington’ – a bordered Georgian stripe, and the wider awninged ‘London’ stripe..
