Our Values

Intro Block

House of Hackney was founded as a direct reaction to the disposable nature of the high street, choosing instead to focus on designs that offer longevity in terms of both aesthetics and quality. Striving to not only look good but do good too, our core values underpin everything we do.

Mindful Purchasing

House of Hackney does not believe in fast, throwaway interiors or fashion trends and instead creates products that are designed to last a lifetime. We encourage the idea of buying little but investing in good quality pieces and use William Morris’ famous quote “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful” as a point of reference when designing collections and filling our own homes. We hope our pieces will become future heirlooms that are passed through the generations.

Made in England

With a commitment to British manufacturing, House of Hackney takes pride in crafting the majority of its products in small-scale UK workshops. Keeping production close to home and supporting small, traditional industries while also creating local employment is hugely important to House of Hackney and allows us to meticulously monitor the quality of our products. Working with some of the UK’s best craftsmen in each of their fields to deliver unparalleled quality, House of Hackney furniture is hand-crafted in Nottingham; our crockery is produced in Stoke-on-Trent, the home of fine bone china; our fabrics in Lancaster; wallpapers in Loughborough and lighting in Wales and Northern Ireland.

Eco-friendly

At House of Hackney, we believe that beautiful, well-made products shouldn’t cost the earth. We are conscious of treating our environment with respect and care so that we can pass it on to the next generation. With this in mind, we have a low-waste approach to manufacturing, producing collections in small batches while printing our wallpapers and crafting furniture on a made to order basis. House of Hackney wallpapers are PVC-free, produced using environmentally certified paper and use water-based inks. Any waste cut from the rolls produced is sent back to the generator to help to create renewable factory power. Our fabrics are Oeko-Tex certified, meaning they are free from harmful chemicals that damage the environment.

Charity begins at home

At House of Hackney we care deeply about both the surrounding local community and the natural world that inspires many of our designs. Since its inception, House of Hackney has run various fundraising initiatives with both local and global charities. These include the organisations First Love Foundation, a Tower Hamlets food bank, and the Hackney-based young people’s charity, Step Forward. We have also donated to the international charities Born Free, Help Refugees and Panthera, the world’s only organisation dedicated to protecting wild cats. This year we continue to support Panthera and the mental health charity, Mind. We also enjoy giving fabric and wallpaper offcuts to local schools for their craft projects!

There are no rules

We are on a mission to demystify the interior design process and believe that living in a sterile white box serves nobody! Champions of print and colour, House of Hackney encourages its customers to take a non-conformist approach to interiors and, most importantly, to have fun with their homes. We believe that there are no strict rules when it comes to interior design, only that you should allow your space to be an extension of your personality filled with the things that you love and that make you happy.
