WE ARE NATURE

It is time to write a new story that includes us in the continuum of the planet we call home. We need to move from a worldview of domination and exploitation to one that honours our place in the ecosystem. As the current inhabitants of the planet, we have a deep responsibility and an opportunity to shift the course we are on and bring ourselves back to Nature. Only then will we begin to truly remedy our relationships with ourselves, each other and the rest of life on Earth.

Inspired by the recent #WeAreNature campaign, where we are petitioning to change all major UK dictionary definitions of ‘nature’ to include humans, the festival hopes to bridge the gap between ourselves and the natural world. The aim is to help co-create a vision for a Nature-centric society which benefits all. It will inspire and incubate collaborative ideas and collective impact which will be translated into practical ways to move towards this societal shift.

Through panels and workshops against a backdrop of art, spoken word and music, we will use creativity to advocate for change. This not-for-profit event will take us from radical roots to practical action.

Kresse Wesling, CBE, is a multi-award winning environmental entrepreneur. Kresse is the founder of lifestyle brand Elvis & Kresse, which uses recycled fire hose to make products, and has established a regenerative agriculture farm and a host of environmental initiatives.

Nature is the original muse. We want to explore the artist as a conduit of Nature; recognising the natural world for its inspiration; paying homage by acting in reciprocity and giving Nature royalties for its services, thus helping to restore and acknowledge the natural world.

Nature is the ultimate designer. Nature takes just what it needs and doesn’t exploit. Nature champions diversity through symbiosis. Nature fits form to function. Nature rewards cooperation and doesn’t value ownership. In Nature, there is no waste. How can we be inspired by Nature the designer and its living systems? How can we use its principles in our work and lives to create healthier, more purposeful designs and organisations?

Nature the poet, the painter, the writer, the player. We believe in the power of creativity as a force for good. We believe we can use our artforms for the benefit of people and planet. We will explore creativity with purpose to help paint, write, sing a new story. Through the arts we can shift the paradigm towards the interconnectedness of all species.

Nature is our wisest teacher. If we observed and listened to the natural world, its cycles and systems, we could solve a lot of the world’s problems. What wonders can we learn from Nature? How can it mentor us? How do we return to a place of being in communion with it in our modern lives?

There is a growing grassroots movement where Nature is beginning to be seen as a stakeholder; where Nature is being given a voice. We are in crisis because Nature has not been considered in our organisational decision making. What are the new models of governance and accounting that can help make this world a better place for future generations?

As earth citizens we have an opportunity to use our platforms to engage with people and help spotlight Nature's visibility, importance and the need to protect it. In the absence of leadership who care about the climate emergency, we need brands to use their consumer power and voice as a force for good. 99% of UK and US businesses are SMEs - imagine the step change if we collectively (and authentically) used our platforms for good?

We look at ourselves as something other than Nature. We have forgotten that we are part of a sacred web of life with all living organisms including plants, animals, rivers, mountains, oceans and their living systems which have equal and inherent rights to exist and thrive. We are witnessing the Nature Rights movement gain momentum where ecosystems are given legal personhood in the same manner as human beings. This has the opportunity to right many wrongs and truly shift the narrative away from a human centric view and solve so many of the planetary crisis we are facing today.

What we believe about our place in Nature determines how we perceive, value, shape and interact with it. How we live with Nature now will determine our future and that of all life on earth. We are the first generations to really know about climate change and the last ones to be able to make a real difference. Nature is a human right, and we need to protect it for those yet to come.

We have forgotten that Nature is our Mother, our lifeforce, our beating heart; that we are Nature, not apart from it. When we hurt Nature, we hurt ourselves. We need to collectively take the urgent action needed to protect the natural world upon which we depend.
