Our Story

At House of Hackney, our mission is to inspire people to protect our common home by bringing the beauty of Nature into theirs.

Proudly B Corp, we tend to our House with care for each other and the natural world; ripping up the rule book since 2011, reworking tradition for a new generation.

In a Victorian townhouse in London, Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle first dreamed up House of Hackney.

Today the husband-and-wife team has grown into a family of artists, designers, producers and collaborators. Powered by a fearless imagination and innovative thinking, we’ve blazed a trail through the magnolia-walled interiors of the 21st century, a riot of colour and print. Built upon the foundations of creativity with purpose, integrity in our actions and compassion for people and planet, we continue to build upon the House, creating unique and inspiring designs that will stand the test of time.

On our doorstep is a special place called Hackney; a village-like borough of London with a melting pot of cultures and a colourful community of creatives that never fail to inspire us.

The House we’ve created is a sanctuary from the outside world, adorned with prints and colours inspired by Mother Nature. Following in the footsteps of our design hero, William Morris, our house is not filled with lots of ‘stuff’, only things that have a purpose, created for both their beauty and their meaning. We call them ‘future heirlooms’; artistically designed, sustainable pieces made in Britain by craftspeople specialising in generations-old trades.

Objects that tell a story; collected treasures that hold memories; music and joy are what make a house a home - live surrounded by what you love.

Our House is your house

Welcome home

As the seeds of our House were planted in 2011, our founders saw an opportunity to create a new model of business; one that valued people and planet above profit, was led by their values, championed slow, sustainable growth and used less invasive production methods.

Here Frieda and Javvy tell the story of how House of Hackney came to be.

In 2011 House of Hackney was born around our kitchen table out of a desire to bring the beauty of the natural world into the home. With a typically tiny London back yard, we wanted to create indoor ‘living’ rooms inspired by the prints and palette of our design muse, Mother Nature. When we couldn’t find the interiors we were looking for we decided to create our own.

After a decade of white-walled minimalism and a time of societal unrest, we no longer wanted to live in a white box, but to surround ourselves with print, colour and texture. Perhaps out of nostalgia for a time passed, we wanted to evoke the wallpapered bedrooms of our 1980’s childhoods. We wanted to empower people to rip up the decorating rule book, to be playful with their homes, and follow their heart to create spaces that truly made them happy.

From the start we had a vision to create a different type of company than the ones we had worked for; one of true integrity which valued its people and our planet; one which was led by head and heart. The world didn’t need another interiors brand –we needed to create one that had true purpose. As our aesthetic was heavily influenced by Britain’s heritage, it was important to us to use local production, for authenticity, quality and to support local employment. We spent 6 months travelling around the UK in our van, knocking on doors and chasing manufacturing leads. Across the country we were excited to find pockets of traditional manufacturing, where families passed down their craft through generations. We believe in buying less, but buying better. The factories we found back then are the same ones we work with today. As a team we turn designs into beautifully crafted products that we call ‘future heirlooms’; pieces created with such skill and integrity that they stand the test of time.

We are hugely inspired by William Morris and share his belief that design should be beautiful, useful and democratic; beauty should be enjoyed by the many, and not the few. We wanted people to be able to save up a little and buy a truly special piece that was designed with purpose, made with love and built to last. This is why we decided from the start that we’d set lower profit margins so we could pitch products at an attainable luxury price so they could be enjoyed by more people.

Neither myself nor my husband and co-founder Javvy studied business before setting up House of Hackney. In many ways this was a blessing. Without having been schooled in the rules of economics we conjured up a heart-led vision for our brand, creating something that was as beautiful inside as it was on the outside – that truly honoured the natural world and the beautiful hands that created our products.

We made it our mission to inspire people to protect our common home by bringing the beauty of Nature into theirs.

We can’t take without giving back and over time House of Hackney has evolved in its purpose to be a voice for Nature. As founders of the brand we humbly work to deliver on this purpose.

Our House is built upon the foundations of Creativity, Compassion and Community. As a B Corp brand, we aim to use our business as a force for good, to truly improve the health and happiness of our planet and its people.

From our Hackney roots, new shoots have grown in London, Cornwall and New York. As part of our regenerative journey it is our mission to champion and support these communities leaving them better than how we found them.

We believe in Nature’s symbiosis and that everyone can do well together. We believe in knowledge sharing and collaboration at grass roots level. We believe that business can be a force for good.

With love

Creativity

The lifeblood of our House is also at the very heart of the human spirit; and when combined with a sense of purpose, we believe that creativity has limitless potential to be a force for good.

Powered by a fearless imagination and innovative way of thinking, we’ve blazed a trail through the magnolia-walled interiors of the 21st century with painterly prints and vibrant colour.

We’re the leaders of the pack; creating trends without being ‘trendy’ and crafting ‘future heirlooms’- pieces that will last not just season after season, but year after year.

We’ve ripped up the interiors rulebook and now, we urge you to go your own way too. By demystifying the decorating process through our inspirational guides, our aim is to empower you to go with your heart's desire, to honour your creative freedom and give you the confidence to do so.

So when it comes to welcoming our House into your home, we say this above all: to thine own self be true.

Compassion

The Earth is an eternal source of inspiration for House of Hackney - she is both the muse and the poet.

In gratitude for all that Mother Nature gives us, we do everything in our power to give back, harnessing eco-friendly materials and methods while championing causes that safeguard the world’s precious wildlife.

Proudly certified as a B Corp, and partnered with the World Land Trust and Panthera, we envision seats in our board meetings for both the Earth and the next generation.

We bring beauty and creativity to the home while reflecting the principles of sustainability that make us who we are. And, by flying the flag for British manufacturing, our business is not only environmentally responsible, but also helps to nurture local, skilled employment.

Our House cares as deeply for people as it does the planet we call home. We support charities that protect the most vulnerable. We rally together to strengthen our local community and, for the House of Hackney family, we create jobs founded on dignity, purpose and wellbeing.

Community

Respect for all life on Earth is key for us. We see human connection and community as a powerful tool to unite us in the common goal of protecting our shared home. We believe in nature’s symbiosis and that everyone can do well together.

We tune in to what is going on in the world. We want to play a role in the movement of a rising awareness of our deep-rooted need as humans to commune with the earth and connect with our communities.

On our doorstep is a special place called Hackney. As we grow globally, we believe the future is local. We nourish our roots in our local community, working with charities and initiatives that leave behind a positive impact.

Our Factories

At House of Hackney, we don’t make ‘products’; we make ‘future heirlooms’. Unique, authentic pieces that are inspired by the past and designed to last for generations to come.

Upon founding our House, we spent six months travelling the length and breadth of the UK in search of the country’s finest craftspeople.

We are proud to still work closely with these small-scale, family-run businesses today – preserving specialist, age-old trades while delivering unparalleled quality.
