Castle of Trematon

Owned by the Duchy of Cornwall since 1337, Trematon Castle – or, as we have come to call it, Castle of Trematon – is a picture-postcard miniature Norman motte-and-bailey castle and gatehouse, situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Tamar Estuary

Sitting atop an ancient pagan site which settlers once saw as the gateway between Cornwall and England, the Castle was built in 1068 by Robert, Count of Mortain to strengthen the hold of William the Conqueror following his triumph in the Battle of Hastings. And yet, given that Britain hasn’t been invaded since (save for the brief, failed expedition at Fishguard in 1797), the fortress has never seen battle.

In 1337, the Castle was bestowed on Edward the Black Prince (a former Prince of Wales), for whom the Grade I-listed gatehouse was built and who, legend has it, only stayed there once. Then, two hundred years later, came the most swashbuckling moment in the Castle’s history, when Elizabeth I ordered Sir Francis Drake to stash looted treasure – a hoard of gold, silver and emeralds pirated from Spanish ships while voyaging the Pacific Ocean – in Trematon Castle before it was later shipped to the Tower of London.

The Castle then fell into neglect and ruin for centuries until, in 1807, the Duchy granted a 100-year lease to naval man Benjamin Tucker, alongside permission to construct a house within the castle courtyard. Yet more change came when part of the medieval castle wall was demolished to create a view from the house down to Plymouth Sound – and then again in 1812, when an ornate swimming pool was carved out in the lower reaches of the garden to commemorate a visit by the Prince Regent, who was later crowned George IV.

Now, the Castle serves as the gateway to a mythical land dreamt up by its newest guardians: House of Hackney founders Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle. Here lies Trematonia, a “queendom” where Mother Nature reigns supreme…

If your existing seats are well-loved, but perhaps a little too well-worn, be it a sumptuous printed velvet or a smooth cotton-linen – can be enough to make you want to snuggle up on them all over again.

When it comes to furniture (which can also be a scene stealer in its own right), your choice will likely be dictated by the number of family members and friends who will regularly be hanging out here: will a cosy two-seater sofa be enough, or will you also need a chaise longue and a few ‘bottomans’ for your visitors to park their, um, bottoms on? If your existing seats are well-loved, but perhaps a little too well-worn, recovering them in a new fabric – be it a sumptuous printed velvet or a smooth cotton-linen – can be enough to make you want to snuggle up on them all over again.

A mantelpiece, if you’re lucky enough to have one, is even more worthy.

The last few pieces of the puzzle are the myriad layers and textures that make a space so inviting. Think a coffee table stacked with books and tactile cushions in an intriguing mix of shapes, sizes and patterns – all things which are easy to move around until you find a combination that appeals to you. A mantelpiece, if you’re lucky enough to have one, is even more swoon-worthy with the addition of eye-catching candelabras, hand-painted porcelain candle pots and treasured keepsakes you’ll have picked up on your travels.

The Gardens

“The most romantic garden in Cornwall” – The Times

Formerly tended by celebrated landscape designers Julian and Isabel Bannerman, who have worked on commissions for the highest in the land, the extraordinary gardens at Castle of Trematon resemble the kind of backdrop you’d expect to see in a Pre-Raphaelite painting.

Illuminated by the light from where the Celtic sea meets the Tamar Estuary, the gardens are swathed with opulent borders and wild, romantic meadows to which Mother Nature herself is the only gardener – all offset by the 14th-century ruins and ramparts that conjure the medieval magic of the legends of King Arthur.

The castle keep sits atop a mound carpeted with wildflowers, while towards the gatehouse lie banks of extravagant blooms, from rambling roses and large-petalled peonies to lush lupines and fragrant lilies. Come the summer months, the air is cloaked in the scent of aromatic wild herbs: thyme, marjoram, woodbine and fennel.

The gardens then give way to an orchard – spangled with Poet’s narcissus and wild tulips growing underneath the apple and cherry trees – as well as enchanting woodland, where foxglove, magnolia and dogwood flourish amongst the ancient oaks. There are even palms, the House of Hackney signature, framing the magnificent view down to the estuary and beyond.

And this is all without mentioning the Indian-inspired outdoor pool, an enclave where the hot tropics meet with the soothing maritime climate and pure waters of Cornwall.

Out here, amongst all the rich colours and evocative scents, you’ll experience not only the sensory pleasure but the peaceful, un-lonely solitude of the natural world. It is a rare sanctuary that will inspire reverie and serenity, lasting long even after you’ve left.

The Interiors

At the heart of Trematon stands a grand Georgian house overlooking the castle courtyard. Built in 1808, the 9-bedroom building was designed by Benjamin Tucker, who bought a 100-year-lease on the castle after it had fallen into ruins. Tucker was a follower of Sir John Soane, the influential British architect noted for his original interpretations of Neo-Classical style – and so the architecture of the house reflects Soane’s love of symmetrical, light-filled spaces.

Since our founders Frieda and Javvy have become its new custodians, the house has undergone an extensive renovation; one that celebrates the Castle’s intriguing history while welcoming in the botanical beauty of the surrounding gardens.

As Frieda and Javvy believe in the restorative virtues of colour, the palette for the interiors draws inspiration from the serene natural tones found in the ground’s flowers and foliage – think a myriad of greens, lilacs, yellows, clay-pinks and earthy reds. Even the roof of the house is painted a lichen-green, as both an ode to Cornwall’s native moss and a symbol of the purity of its coastal air.

Adorned in House of Hackney’s imaginative prints, the interiors also act as a miniature museum for irreverent British design. In keeping with our ethos of championing local factories and generations-old techniques, the décor is anchored by timeless yet characterful creations, crafted by artisans – the finest our fair isle has to offer. From the artwork to the lighting, each piece you see is available to buy and take home with you (or purchase later via the House of Hackney website) as a memento of your stay.

The Accommodation

Each bedroom in the main house takes it name and theme from a beloved House of Hackney collection, from the painterly blooms of ARTEMIS to the pastoral romance of RAINBOW ROSE.

Luxurious yet comfortable, all rooms boast breathtaking views out on to the gardens while welcoming in their botanical beauty through our nature-inspired motifs. To ensure the deepest of sleeps, the beds (all king or super-king) are either antique or four-posters handcrafted by Titchmarsh & Goodwin, then topped with traditionally made mattresses – filled with wool, cashmere and silk – by EPOC Handcrafted Beds. Each bed is also dressed in fine linens by Peter Reed and, of course, blankets and cushions by House of Hackney. Lining the house are exquisitely woven carpets and rugs, the fruits of a special collaboration between House of Hackney and Axminster Carpets.

The ‘Flora Fantasia’ Room

Occupying the master bedroom, ‘Flora Fantasia’ takes its design cues from the exquisite flowers in the Castle gardens, subverting the traditional shapes of the room’s furnishings through an unexpected floral motif. Pride of place hangs a painting by Cornish-based artist Teresa Pemberton, whose work (like ours) is rooted in nature.

The ‘Wild Card’ Room

As the ‘mistress’ bedroom of the house, ‘Wild Card’ also draws inspiration from the fantastical gardens – this time contrasted with the rosettes of our iconic, perfectly proportioned leopard print. On the walls you’ll find supernatural, psychedelic creations by London-based artists Henry Colborne and Seana Gavin.

The ‘Flora Delanica’ Room

Cosy yet regal in feel, ‘Flora Delanica’ is steeped in botanical beauty – mirroring the lush landscapes of Trematonia while honouring the exquisite floral collages of 18th century English artist Mary Delany. Flourishing on the walls is artwork by Nicolette Vine and Henry Colborne (who also hails from Hackney).

The ‘Rainbow Rose’ Room

Inspired by its views over the rose-clad medieval gatehouse, ‘Rainbow Rose’ is adorned in a pastel-hued print of an English rose garden, set against the backdrop of a rainbow. A painting by Cornish-based artist Henrietta Dubrey acts as an ode to the theme of Mother Nature reigning over the Castle.

The ‘Artemis’ Room

Enwrapped by the imaginary blooms of our most iconic print, ‘Artemis’ captures the magic of the Castle’s flower gardens. You’ll find a few more of our House classics in here too – from intertwining serpents to rosettes of leopard spots – alongside artwork by Nicolette Vine and Henrietta Dubrey.

The ‘Amaranthine’ Room‌

Fit for a queen, ‘Amaranthine’ is dressed in our psychedelic damask print, in a regal palette of jade-green, bronze and topaz-blue. Along with supremely soft floor coverings courtesy of Axminster Carpets, it’s adorned with a Victorian-era four-poster bed and a Bellerby & Co. globe of the land of Trematonia.

If your existing seats are well-loved, but perhaps a little too well-worn, be it a sumptuous printed velvet or a smooth cotton-linen – can be enough to make you want to snuggle up on them all over again.

The Bathrooms

In sympathy to the original plans for the house, the bathrooms are shared (with one bathroom per two bedrooms), all beautifully refurbished with classic Georgian-style bathware courtesy of Burlington. The joint bathroom for ‘Flora Fantasia’ and ‘Wild Card’ even retains the original canopy bath.

The Castle Cabin and Caravans

Elsewhere on the grounds you’ll find a few other enchanting options for your stay: the reimagined retro Caravans and the charmingly rustic ‘Florika’ Cabin.

A trio of reclaimed campers from the 1950s, 60s and 70s, the Castle Caravans have been lovingly renovated in keeping with House of Hackney’s ethos on recovering and repurposing. And now, not only is each one swathed in print – be it the painterly wildflowers of ARTEMIS, the majestic trees of PLANTASIA, or the rebellious riot of blooms across HOLLYHOCKS – but kitted out with everything you need to enjoy your escape in the great outdoors.

Meanwhile, sitting at the foot of the medieval bailey on the edge of the woods is the ‘Florika’ Cabin: a studio-style abode swathed in mesmerising blooms. Complete with a self-catering stove, mini-oven and barbecue – not to mention the outdoor shower that allows you to feel at one with nature by soaking under a canopy of trees – and you have the ultimate retreat into the wild.
