Design Notes

The hand-painted AMANITA bauble is crafted specially for House of Hackney by Dalit Goods Co, the charity that provides work for the underprivileged in India. Adorned with the fairytale toadstool and our Yuletide icon, the magical Amanita, this folkloric fungi harks back to Christmas’s psychedelic origins, where it was given as a gift for Winter Solstice. Throughout Northern Europe, this mushroom was used in shamanic rituals; grown beneath the boughs of the pine tree, and taken by the shaman who would enter a trance and visit the realm between our world and the next to bring back gifts of healing and knowledge from the spirits beyond. Even the shaman’s reindeer would eat the mushrooms, causing them to dance and prance, as if they were in flight. Now, does this mystical man and his fleet of flying reindeer remind you of anyone?
