HOUSE OF HACKNEY'S ECO MANIFESTO
We’re doing our bit to contribute towards a happier planet…
House of Hackney does not believe in fast, throwaway interiors trends and instead creates products that are designed to last a lifetime. We encourage the idea of buying little but investing in good quality pieces. We hope our wares will become future heirlooms, passed through generations and standing the test of time in terms of high-quality craftmanship as well as enduring aesthetics.
We have a low-waste approach to manufacturing, producing collections in small batches while printing our wallpapers and crafting furniture on a made to order basis. This way we avoid making more than is needed.
MADE IN ENGLAND
Working with some of the UK’s best craftsmen in each of their fields to deliver unparalleled quality, House of Hackney furniture is hand-crafted in Nottingham; our crockery is produced in Stoke-on-Trent; our fabrics in Lancaster; wallpapers in Loughborough and lighting in Wales and Northern Ireland.
NO MORE FEATHERS
We have recently changed the fillings of our cushions from feather to 100% wool which is considered to be the eco-friendliest option currently available. The wool used comes from British sheep and is shorn and scoured here in the UK.
House of Hackney wallpapers are some of the most sustainable available. Unlike most wallpapers produced in Europe, they are PVC-free and made using paper from FSC-certified papermills. Our fabrics are free from harmful chemicals that damage the environment.
Where possible our packaging is made from recycled and biodegradable materials and our new reusable tote bag – free with every cushion order – aims to make it easier for you to say no to plastic bags when shopping. What’s more, this bag helps to support Indian workers’ rights, pay and employment policies and safer factory conditions for those along the supply chain.
Through various initiatives, we have donated to local charities First Love Foundation, Step Forward and Hackney Winter Night Shelter. International charities we’ve supported include Help Refugees, Friends of the Earth, Panthera, Mind and Women for Women International.
In both our Head Office and Flagship Store, we are careful to limit the amount of paper we use and recycle any paper or card that we do. We have banned all plastic bottles and straws, encouraging the use of reusable versions instead.
