BESPOKE CURTAINS & BLINDS  - HOW TO GUIDE
Midnight Garden Curtains

House of Hackney curtains and blinds bring a finished luxury to any interior as well as keeping a room warm in winter and keeping out bright sunshine in summer. Our bespoke service offers you a wide choice of headings, fabrics and styles to create a truly bespoke dressing. Simply supply your window measurements and follow the easy instructions below.

  • Fitting Tips for prior to measuring up

    1. Fit the track/pole on the wall before measuring your curtain drop length. As any change in pole height will change how the curtain falls.

    2. Make sure that any refurbishment work that affects the curtain rail / floor height is completed.

    3. Use a metal measuring tape to get the most accurate measurements.

    4. If you’re unsure about anything contact our in store bespoke team or fill out an order request form below.

How to measure width and length

Measure the total width of the track or pole (excluding the finials) – do not measure the window unless it is wall-to-wall. Don't forget to allow for overlap – this is an additional measurement, normally 2.5cm (1 inch) that allows the hanging curtains to overlap in the middle when they are closed.

    Measuring the length

Before measuring the length, decide whether you want your curtains to fall to the sill, below the sill or to the floor. We suggest that:

    • Sill length curtains finish 1.25cm (1/2 inch) above the sill.
    • Curtains that fall below the sill finish 15cm (6 inches) below.
    • Floor length curtains finish 1.5cm (1/2 inch) from the floor (although you can create a romantic, Bohemian look by having them longer so that they actually trail on the floor).

    How to meausre a Track:
    1. Width

    Measure the entire track length

    2. OVERLAP, RETURNS, SPRINGBACK

Our curtain maker will add extra to allow for these

    3. DROP - choose from 3 options

Measure from the top of the track to:
    • the window sill minus 1cm for allowance
    • the window sill plus 15cm
    • the floor minus 2cm for allowance

    4. HEADING HEIGHT

Measure from the top of the track to the eye of the hooks

    How to measure a Pole:
    1. Width

Measure between the finials (between the decorative ends)

    2. OVERLAP, RETURNS, SPRINGBACK

Our curtain maker will add extra to allow for these

    3. DROP - choose from 3 options

Measure from the eye of the ring to:
    • the window sill minus 1cm for allowance
    • the window sill plus 15cm
    • the floor minus 2cm for allowance

    4. HEADING HEIGHT

    We add 2cm as standard.

  • How to measure for a blind :

    • Please add 5cm to 15cm to the recess size to ensure good coverage of the window.
